Split – Alternative Rock
Formed in Mumbai in 2001, Split emerged as one of India’s most distinctive alternative rock bands. With a sound rooted in post-grunge and alt-rock influences, the band carved out a reputation for original music that was both hard-hitting and deeply relatable. Over the years, their line-up has included Garreth D’Mello on vocals, Melroy D’Mello and Aviv Pereira on guitars, Shekhar Mohite on bass, and drummers Nigel Calsco and Varoon Aiyer.

What set Split apart was their ability to blend raw energy with thoughtful lyricism. Their songs explored everything from the frustrations of urban life and social issues to personal struggles and psychological depth. Whether singing about potholes and traffic or about faith, violence, and resilience, Split always sought to speak directly to the realities of their audience.

The band first made waves on India’s independent music circuit with their EP P Is For Pig and went on to release their debut full-length album Counting Perfume in 2012. Tracks like Holy Ghost Machine Gun and Return to Bicameralism showcased their sharp songwriting and uncompromising style. They toured extensively across India, performing at major festivals and venues, and earned respect for their live energy and commitment to original music.

Though the band saw changes and breaks along the way, Split remains remembered as a fearless voice in Indian rock—a group that never compromised on authenticity and left an indelible mark on the country’s alternative music scene.

In 2016, Melroy from the band met Mukul in Paris.

The little time they spent left a lasting impression on him. Split and Melroy would like to dedicate the song “Punk Rock Days” to the memory of Mukul.

With love, Split and Melroy
